In the
World Outreach department, Week of Compassion begins Sunday, February 19th.
Have you
ever stopped to contemplate that literally all that we are and all that we
have is of God? What an awesome concept! Therefore, our response to that
Creator God is to give back. There is no greater joy than being in a
position to share our gifts and resources with those in need. If we have
enough, but others are lacking, we remind ourselves that God already created
a world of plenty, and that it is up to us to distribute and share what we
have
with
those who don't have enough. I vividly recall this remote village in
northern India and the looks in the eyes of a woman and her children, when
they received a goat from Week of Compassion. This goat would change their
lives! One goat! How wonderful it felt in that moment to know that what
Disciples had given was now improving the lives of an entire community. What
joy!
This
Week of Compassion special offering season, February 19-26, we continue to
discern how “Sharing Brings Joy.” This Week of Compassion we hope you will
lift up how that sharing blesses, transforms, and brings joy to others. In a
time of uncertainty, fear, and continuing economic hardship in our country
and in our world, I can think of no better offering to give back to God than
our profound joy in knowing that we do, indeed, have all we need--and more.
For “the point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you
must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) The early
Christians are encouraged here to share the joy in giving by letting others
witness their generosity so that all may see how God is being glorified and
how others' lives change as a result of our generosity.
For more
than six decades, Disciples of Christ in the United States and Canada have
shared material resources with a hurting world through Week of Compassion,
bringing glory to God as well as joy to others. God's people giving of their
resources--prayer, money, time, talent--remains the propellant behind Week
of Compassion. The act of giving back to God is simply a matter of faith. It
is the natural reaction to our saying “yes!” to following Christ. Sharing
with others invites God more fully into our lives. As we reach out in love,
we open the way for God to reach more deeply into us. Sharing will joyfully
transform you as you help transform the world.
This
year, as you share your tithes and offerings with Week of Compassion,
remember all the ways your gifts bring joy to others. Sow bountifully and
share abundantly, knowing that you are not only helping change the
statistics, you are also helping change lives. May we all give cheerfully
and multiply the joy!
Week of
Compassion: sharing resources, changing lives, spreading joy.

WOW!
Thanksgiving blew right past me and Christmas is now about three weeks away!
Even though I just spent three hours at Wal-Mart, I am no where near ready!
Can somebody
apply a
hand brake to that calendar?
Actually, I am looking forward to Christmas this year because it falls on a
Sunday which means we get to celebrate Jesus' birthday together as a
congregation! I think that's going to be the very best gift I receive this
year! Imagine the magical excitement of Christmas morning filling our
awesomely decorated sanctuary, extra whispering between the kids about what
they've received or yet to receive, and the adults lingering even longer
during our "time to get romantic, folks!" segment! As one body, we will lift
up praise and carols to Jesus as a birthday gift to Him because that's what
this season is all about! I hope our youth (and parents!) will make it a
point to be at church on the 25th for this extra-special, extra-close time
with Jesus!
You can
wear those new clothes Santa just brought you! Duh-oh!! ;o(
Respectfully submitted,
Outreach
Committee Chair: Ken Cutway
Worship Committee
Thank
you to everyone who helped remove the Christmas Decorations.
We will soon be preparing for the Lenten Season and Easter.
General Board:
Met on
Tuesday, January 10th. The

Anita Owen, Chairman; Randy White, 1st Vice Chairman; Ken Cutway, 2nd
Vice Chairman; and Carrie Brett, Board Secretary
February
is the Month of Love... AND LOCK-IN's!!
That's right, Angels... WE are hosting a lock-in right here, at First
Christian Greensburg, over President's Day weekend; and WE NEED Y-O-U!!!
Details
are still being worked out; but our Lock-in will begin 6:00 p.m. on
SATURDAY, February 18, and end around 12:30 p.m. on SUNDAY, February 19.
Conveniently, many schools will be closed for the holiday on Monday
the 20th so you can catch up on your sleep (because WHO sleeps at lock-ins
anyways????)! For our newer
teammates who are wondering what all this fuss is about... A lock-in is
aptly named because you come to the church and don't leave the building
until it's over! (Never fear...
We WILL unlock the door before it's time if your parents need to pick you up
for a previously scheduled event because we want you to come, even if it's
just for part of the time!)
Bring a sleeping bag and pillow (in case you do run out of energy and
crash!); we'll supply all the food and fun!
A small fee charged at the door helps defray costs; however, this
time, ALL proceeds are going toward improvements needed at Camp Laurelview.
BRING YOUR FRIENDS and have a great time together while making new
friends and helping Laurelview - the place where beautiful memories and
friendships are created for Disciples youth!
So, be
on the lookout for more lock-in information as it becomes available either
in the weekly church bulletin, on the Angels' bulletin board, or via John
Owen (on Facebook or at church service)!
Also,
have you bought your copy of the Laurelview calendar yet?
This calendar was brainstormed and designed by our own Disciples
ladies, and each month has a beautiful color photo featuring a different
highpoint of the camp:
campers and counselors (both past and present!), special Laurelview spots,
and the breathtaking natural beauty of this magical place!
The calendar is something you'll want to keep since most of the faces
are familiar to you (many of you ARE in those pictures!) AND it benefits a
great cause as ALL monies collected from this calendar go toward Laurelview
improvements. Maybe you can buy
a calendar, bring it to the lock-in, and get people to autograph it -- it's
sort of a yearbook -- or maybe we should say YEARS book !
Hey,
don't leave to start packing just yet!
How are you doing on your scripture-reading challenge?
Are you taking some time to write in your Prayer Journal?
(Don't forget... Renny is available if you have any questions or need
help!) These two activities will
keep that Christmas Spirit alive and prevent you from slipping into those
dark-days-of-winter blues that frequently affect people after the
decorations are taken down!
Speaking of which... there are still two Charlie Brown mini-Christmas trees
left that are yours to put in your room or special place as a reminder to
stay focused on Jesus and maintain the holiday closeness ALL Christians
strive for year round!

Met on Tuesday, September 13 at 7:30 pm.
The Board discussed the Stewardship Campaign, the new
flagpoles, numbers for our copier, & the resignation of our choir director.
They voted to hire someone to help with our Youth ministry.
Will
meet on Wednesday October 12 at 7:30 in the Parlor.
If you are a committee chair, please mark your calendar and plan to
attend. If you cannot be here,
please ask someone from your committee to come in your place.

The Christian Women's Fellowship is expanding our direct ministries to those within and at the edges of our church family. Women, Men and Young People interested in visitation and other forms of direct ministry are encouraged to sign-up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex, or talk to Jan Owen, Cindy Ball, or Pastor Renny.
CWF meets Tuesdays.. Come for food, games, prizes, friends and fun. All members and friends invited!
The membership committee will no longer be making calls to set up
greeters on a monthly basis. A Greeter Schedule has been posted on the
bulletin board based on the greeters from last year. If you have any
scheduling conflicts or no longer wish to serve, please either switch
with someone or call the church office and we will take care of it.
Thank You!
Please help us with cookie donations for Meals-on-Wheels. The first Sunday of each month is Cookie Sunday! Just bring your cookies in and leave them in the kitchen. Volunteers will divide them into individual serving bags. Thank You For Your Help!!
Oh wow,
let's all take a deep breath and slowly exhale, slowly and relax. Do you
have any idea what you Disciples did this Christmas? You all are amazing!
Our Outreach committee is so blessed to have you all around us, supporting
our holiday outreach efforts. As the need increases we are amazed that your
generosity equals our requests. We keep asking, how far can we stretch this
congregation's generosity and every holiday it another miracle.
This
Christmas we fed and supported 23 families. That equals our record for
Thanksgiving but at Christmas there is the addition of all the gifts for the
kids at ParentWise and the folks at Threshold. Total, I've lost count, well
over 50 gifts plus hats and mitts. Some of the mitts were really special.
Hand made with loving hands just like the ones my mom made when I was a kid.
Remember the ones that were attached to each that went through your sleeves
so you couldn't lose them? Oh boy, did that bring back special Christmas
memories.
So all
you Disciples, give yourself a big pat on the back and thank the Lord that
we did it again this Christmas. The Lord will take care of next year and we
will again be what we are. So now rest a bit and reflect and recharge
because as the world turns, winter will be with us and spring will come and
Easter will be an occasion to celebrate our Lord and help families meet
their daily needs and come to Christ in their own time. God Bless You All in
the New Year.

WORLD OUTREACH

To paraphrase an old Beatles tune: "The minute you start to sing
your part, then you will start to make it better." Take a good thing
and make it better. Lend your voice to the Choir, practice on Wednesday
nights at 7:00 PM.
See Dawn if you are interested.

The first seven years of life constitute the period for laying the foundations of religion..This is the most important period in the whole of a person's life in determining His/Her later religious attitudes.
